The Project HJW was to design a memorable masterpiece which is a coat rack. I'm responsible for the engineering of the injection moulded parts and the engineering of the construction of the hidden latching system. The challenge was to keep the product simple and easy to produce while it's very hard to create a screwless latching system to assemble the 3 legs. After a few test we came up with a latching solution with very fine tolerances for a nice snug fit.
The elegant three-legged design by design duo GECKELER MICHELS embodies the history and craftsmanship of the family firm. The three powder-coated steel legs represent the three generations of Functionals formerly known as van Esch. Van Esch was founded 50 years ago, and we are celebrating this with the HJW coat stand. An ode to van Esch founder Hendricus Johannes Wilhelmus van Esch (1928 – 2020), also known as HJW.
